Midweek Service at Calvary Chapel Tucson

Commentary on Joel 1, 2

A common theme for the minor prophets is the judgment of God upon people who have deliberately turned their back on Him, and begun to live lives that are harmful to themselves and the people around them.

Because God is a Judge, He brings judgment. In the book of Joel, we see a locust swarm that is spoken of as the judgment of God and is then compared to the worst time this world will ever see, the tribulation period.

This week, we will cover God’s warning of judgment, His advice to avoid it, and a look ahead to the tribulation period and the locusts mentioned there. We are also going to learn a lot about those pesky locusts!

His Workmanship

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Can you see it? A master craftsman holds up his work to take a closer look. He turns it this way and that way, then runs his hand along his masterpiece, How many hours, how much work, how much time spent on details? One thing he would never do is rush to get it finished. He wants it just right.

What a picture of the hand of God in our lives. We are His workmanship. He is taking His time. No need to rush. You might say it seems like it’s taking to long. However with God, there is no "too long". David said, "I will not be satisfied until I awake in His likeness," and God is not satisfied until we are His masterpiece.

Not only does this verse tell us we are His workmanship, but that we are created for good works. He is not just making us into a centerpiece that looks good, but He is working in us to make us just right for the works He has prepared for us. All that we face and go through get us ready for the work He has prepared beforehand.

May we be submissive to the work of the Master Craftsman in our life, as He prepares us to be just right for the work He has called us to do. May our lives be highly effective for the cause of Christ and may we bring glory to His name.
