Friends and Enemies

“Thus Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him; and Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul became David’s enemy continually. Then the princes of the Philistines went out to war. And so it was, whenever they went out, that David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed.” ~ 1 Samuel 18:28-30

            Saul pursues David in his jealousy and envy. Saul goes from loving David, the young boy who defeats Goliath and plays the harp to remove Saul’s distressing spirit. David is a sanctuary and rock to Saul in the beginning. Then, the people praise David more highly than Saul. “Saul has slain his thousands,/ And David his ten thousands” (1 Samuel 18:7). In hearing this praise, Saul’s becomes enraged with jealousy and his love for David quickly turns to hatred.

Through a number of schemes, commands and through his own hand, Saul pursues to take the life of David. Saul sinks so low that he even commands the murder of 85 priests, and countless women, children and infants. Saul, who starts so well, sinks to the depths of depravity. At this point, David could have been on the cliffs of despair. He could have retaliated against Saul, his current king. However, David continues to behave wisely causing others to turn to him, as the future king.

David runs from Saul and takes refuge in godly friends. Saul’s own son Jonathan is David’s dear friend, as well as the prophet Samuel. Later, David even gathers a small coalition of men who have been rejected by society as his companions.

While Saul makes enemies all around him, David seeks friendships. It is so important to cultivate Godly, encouraging friendships. When times are difficult or trying, friendships and Godly counsel will be God’s provision to help bring you through the raging storms of life.

Is someone mistreating you? Behave wisely. Don’t retaliate.

Finally, if you have an enemy, pray for their salvation. God can change their heart, and yours.

“But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil” (Luke 6:35 NKJV)
